History of the Western UP

Throughout the region you will find evidence of the past. Sometimes that history may be a museum, a building on the National Register of Historic Places or a Heritage Travel Corridor. Visit one of the many museums our area offers. Relive days gone-by in Ironwood, Bessemer, Wakefield. Ontonagon and Hurley.

The Lighthouse and the Courthouse in Ontonagon are a few of the buildings on the National Register. The main street in the town of Montreal, WI is also on the register. Many houses remain white in this quaint town from the days of mining.

The Heritage Travel Corridors are located in Iron County. Wisconsin. Each travel corridor tells the stories of the ethnic settlements, Iumberjack days. iron mining communities and Native American trading. The trails are multi-use, allowing for a variety of recreation opportunities including mountain biking, canoeing, kayaking all-terrain vehicle riding and touring. Come and enjoy the Iron County Heritage Festival held during the first two weeks of August featuring many events each day.

Come and explore the past. Maps marking historic sites are available and easy to follow. Discover the past on your own or as part of a naturalist program offered through the State Parks.
