Greetings, my name is Ann Marie DeCarlo-Batiste, I am originally from Ironwood, MI. but now reside in Hurley, WI. I first picked up an art brush in my 10th grade art class. Rich vibrant colors, brush strokes, turpentine, linseed oil, water, oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, and graphite have been part of my life for thirty-five years. I'm thankful for the lessons I received from Guy Phillip Morey and Paul Castagna, as well as my college education from Gogebic Community College where Skip Bessen was my professor and mentor.
Most of my inspiration comes from pain and human injustice. In 1995 I participated in a mission trip to Africa, visiting seven countries and learning how much the human spirit goes through to survive. I especially learned unconditional love and I aim to emulate that every day of my life. I am also inspired by life and the love of those around me. My spiritual experiences have shaped me as a person, and those stories can be found in my paintings. My husband and two children inspire me to continue painting.
When asked by my daughter why I paint, I struggled to put an answer into words. I replied, "I paint because God has given me a gift, and with that gift I am able to take a journey by grace that is blessed, though not easy. I know that He is always watching over me, and He flows through me with every brush stroke."
I have received Best of Shows, Honorable Mentions and Featured Artist in previous art shows. I am currently illustrating a poetry book that will be published this year. I have also judged the art for the Gogebic County Fair in Michigan for 7 years.
My new studio space is in Hurley, Wisconsin on the corner of Highway 51 and Silver Street. I share space with my sister Jody who owns and teaches music at the Hurley Music Studio. My goal is to paint as much as I can, for as long as I can, on this grace-filled journey of brush strokes. It is best to call me for appointments #906-364-1125 or email amdb4@charter.net.
